Richard “Kinky” Friedman, a cherished country singer, passed away at 79 at his home in Echo Hill, Texas. The announcement came through X on Thursday, stating, “Kinky stepped on a rainbow, surrounded by family and friends.” Despite facing significant hardships, Kinky’s humor and resilience endured.

Kinky’s musical journey began at the University of Texas with his band King Arthur & the Carrots and later with the Texas Jewboys. His solo album debuted in 1974, and he toured with Bob Dylan. Known for his quick wit, he also wrote detective novels and contributed to Texas Monthly. Kinky ran for Texas governor in 2006, finishing fourth as an independent candidate. His last album, Circus of Life, came out in 2018. Kinky’s legacy will live on through his music, books, and the memories of those who loved him.
