Why a 2024 Trump-Biden rematch might be more of a referendum on Trump than Biden

In a possible 2024 rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, voters’ sentiments about Trump could take center stage. A CNN poll reveals that 62% of Trump supporters view their choice as support for him, while 64% of Biden backers see their vote as a vote against Trump. Only a third on either side consider it a referendum on the current president.

This dynamic could also mirror the 2022 midterms, where opposition to Trump remained a strong factor, despite his not being in office. Hypothetical matchups show Biden in close races against other GOP contenders, especially Nikki Haley.

Antipathy toward the opposing party also plays a role, with some anti-Trump voters considering alternative Republican candidates. The poll was conducted among 1,503 adults from August 25-31, with a margin of error of 3.5 points for the full sample and 3.6 points for registered voters.
