Earth has tilted 31.5 inches over two decades, largely from extensive groundwater pumping, according to a study in Geophysical Research Letters. Between 1993 and 2010, 2,150 gigatons of groundwater were extracted, causing sea levels to rise and disrupting Earth’s rotational balance.

Scientists highlight the global impact of local groundwater use, urging sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation to mitigate future risks. The findings stress the need for immediate action to preserve planetary stability.
