An Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 plane crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 of the 67 onboard, including 28 survivors, two of whom are children. The flight, en route from Baku to Grozny, veered off course and crashed near the Caspian Sea oil hub.
The Kazakh ministry confirmed passengers included nationals from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Investigations are underway, with Azerbaijani officials at the site.
President Ilham Aliyev declared a national mourning day and canceled his Russia visit. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov expressed their condolences.
Emergency crews and specialist doctors are working to assist survivors. Azerbaijan Airlines stated the plane attempted an emergency landing 3 km from Aktau.
