At Age 22, Prince Frederik Passes Away: After A Health Battle Luxembourg Royal With A Rare Genetic Condition Dies

Prince Robert of Luxembourg has announced the passing of his 22-year-old son, Prince Frederik, on March 1 after a long battle with POLG Mitochondrial Disease, a rare genetic disorder. Diagnosed at 14, Frederik founded The POLG Foundation to advance research and treatments.

In a heartfelt statement, Prince Robert shared that Frederik, even in his final moments, displayed humor and compassion, saying goodbye to loved ones on Rare Disease Day. He praised his son’s strength, emotional intelligence, and unwavering resilience.

Born in France, Frederik lived in London before settling in Switzerland. His passing follows Grand Duke Henri’s abdication in December, making way for his son Guillaume to assume the throne in October. Henri’s departure follows Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s abdication earlier this year. Luxembourg’s royal family continues to honor Frederik’s legacy and mission.
