Audio recording captures moments after FedEx plane catches fire midair causing emergency landing

A FedEx Boeing 767-3S2F cargo plane, Flight 3609, experienced an engine fire shortly after takeoff from Newark Liberty International Airport on March 1, 2025. The fire, reportedly caused by a bird strike, forced the pilots to declare an emergency and return to the airport, landing safely within nine minutes. Emergency crews quickly extinguished the flames, and no injuries were reported.

Video footage captured flames engulfing the aircraft’s right engine as it scrambled back to the runway. Air traffic was briefly halted but resumed shortly after. The FAA and NTSB launched investigations, citing an increase in bird strikes, with over 19,000 incidents reported in 2023 alone.

FedEx commended the swift response of its crew and first responders. Following inspections, the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey to Indianapolis later that morning. The incident is the latest in a series of aviation emergencies, raising renewed concerns about air travel safety and the increasing frequency of bird strikes affecting aircraft worldwide.
