RESCUE DOG with autoimmune disease that proved beauty comes from within has sadly passed away

Phoenix, a stray dog with a severe facial disfigurement, touched hearts with his resilience and spirit. Discovered in Collinsville, Oklahoma, in 2020 by Carisa Ducharne, Phoenix was brought to Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Shelter. His appearance shocked many, leading to initial doubts about the authenticity of his condition.

Despite his disfigurement, Phoenix was cared for by Family Animal Medicine, who suspected a rare autoimmune disease called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) as the cause. Phoenix’s life began to change for the better, and his story went viral, inspiring people with autoimmune diseases and burn victims.

Though some effects of his condition were permanent, Phoenix remained upbeat and received many adoption requests. However, he needed ongoing treatment and veterinary clearance.

Tragically, in June 2020, Skiatook Paws & Claws Animal Rescue announced Phoenix’s passing. He found his person in Dr. Gena, and he passed away peacefully, surrounded by love and support.

Phoenix’s story reminds us that inner beauty and resilience shine through adversity, leaving a lasting impact.
