Nature offers mental tranquility, and a walk in the forest can lead to unexpected encounters. Kym Beechey, an amateur photographer from Australia, enjoys exploring nature and capturing its wonders. On one of her walks, she thought she spotted a happy newborn tawny frogmouth, resembling an owl-like bird.

Excited to photograph it, she zoomed in for the perfect shot, believing the bird was smiling. However, her excitement turned to amusement as she realized her mistake – it was a banksia pod, not a bird at all. Banksia trees, found mainly in south-western Australia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand, produce these pods, which can have a distinctive appearance.

Though banksia pods may resemble pine cones, they are not conifers. Their unique appearance results from the pods bursting open, often during forest fires, to release their seeds.
